Hawaii Farmers & Ranchers need Your support today!

We need your help getting testimony to the Hawaii County Council; Opposing Brenda Ford’s GMO Ban Bill 109 and Margaret Wille’s Bill 113 which bans gmo’s but allows for a papaya exemption if your granted an exemption, ie pay fee’s disclose your farms location….

This might just be the biggest threat to Hawaii agriculture

and Our right to farm that we have ever seen…

We’re inviting you to attend the Council hearing on Sept. 4th at 1:30PM and….

Please submit testimony TODAY via email to
This is important to Hawaii agriculture, our farmers and our ranchers. We’re standing united together against both these bills. We’re asking you to submit testimony and to please ask five of your family or friends to do the same and ask them to ask five of their friends, etc….that is the only way we can get the numbers we need to defeat these Bills.

Remember agriculture producers only make up 2% of the Nation….Yet we feed us all! It will take knowing agriculture and the community supporting farmers and ranchers if we’re to survive and thrive…

Brenda Ford’s Bill  basically bans all GMO production and use, including feed for animals and also includes a requirement to destroy papaya trees and corn currently in production.

Margaret Wille also has Bill 113  that will be heard at the same hearing (agenda attached).  Her Bill exempts the genetically modified papaya and other GMO crops currently in production on Hawaii County as long as they jump through her hoops (new regulations, fees and penalties).  Her Bill allows no future use of geneticly engineered technology to grow feed, fight diseases in crops and livestock or using them in the future.

Despite the exemption for papaya in Wille’s Bill, papaya farmers are giving her Bill a thumbs down.  Their position is that her Bill says that GMO papaya is bad but since it’s already here and widespread the County Council will let it go. She infers their contaminated and inferior; they are NOT their prime is taste and quality.  Kudos to the papaya industry for recognizing this and standing their ground…we will stand together with them. “Ag United”

As farmers and ranchers we have the right to farm…with every legal method and technology out there, organically or conventionally, with or without genetic technology and with respect for the rights of our fellow farmers and ranchers to do the same.

Here is what the World’s Health & Scientific Organizations have to say about GMO’s and genetically engineered crops….

World Health Organization “WHO”

“No effects on human health have been shown as a result of the consumption of such foods by the general population in the countries where they have been approved.”

National Academy of Sciences

“No adverse health effects attributed to genetic engineering have been documented in the human population.”

American Association for the Advancement of Science

“The science is quite clear: crop improvement by the modern molecular techniques of biotechnology is safe.”

American Medical Association

“There is no scientific justification for special labeling of bioengineered foods.Bioengineered foods have been consumed for close to 20 years, and during that time, no overt consequences on human health have been reported and/or substantiated in the peer-reviewed literature.”

 European Commission

“No scientific evidence associating GMOs with higher risks for the environment or for food and feed safety than conventional plants and organisms.”

 French Academy of Science

“All criticisms against GMOs can be largely rejected on strictly scientific criteria.

Union of German Academics and Scientists

“In consuming food derived from GM plans approved in the EU and in the USA, the risk is in no way higher than in the consumption of food from conventionally grown plants. On the contrary, in some cases food from GM plants appears to be superior in respect to health. ”

Yet despite all the science and the evidence Hawaii County is trying to make public policy based on emotions rather than the evidence…Really! Come on…

Testimony Against Bills 109 and 113

Committee Chair Ford and Members of the Committee:

I oppose Bills 109 and 113 because any anti-GMO legislation in Hawaii County will discriminate against our farmers and ranchers who choose to use approved genetic engineered technology to grow safe and wholesome food and other agriculture products. These Bills also damage Hawaii’s reputation for producing some of the best crops on the planet, harms our markets, and eventually destroy our agriculture industry.

I am pro-farming and the right to farm in the United States of America, still a free country, under laws of and regulated by the USA and the State of Hawaii.

Hawaii’s farmers and ranchers may need virus resistant GMO crops to protect Hawaii from the next papaya virus strain, banana bunchy top virus, tomato spotted wilt and other vegetable viruses, or the bacterial citrus greening disease that is destroying the Florida citrus industry and may soon come to Hawaii.  Furthermore, this bill will stop development of GMO ornamental and floral crops with enhanced horticultural or disease resistant characteristics.  These Bills would prohibit livestock and aquaculture producers from efficiently growing cost effective feed locally, requiring them to import at a higher price the exact same feeds.  How will Hawaii County farmers and ranchers compete when everyone but us has access to GE technology?

The consensus of independent scientific organizations worldwide is unanimous and can be summed up by this statement from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, “The science is quite clear: crop improvement by the modern molecular techniques of biotechnology is safe.”

Please vote against Bill 109 and Bill 113

Mahalo for helping with our cause, it matters!

Please share this information with your friends and family, Support Hawaii Agriculture!

Is Hawaii, Paradise being Poisoned?

AbsoFreakinlutely  by fear, threats, fear mongering a witch hunt conducted by those who don’t trust anyone or anything but their own WePedia “WePedia = perception based on words, even if their myths they force feed and make them the truth by feeding the un-informed”….

It’s their way or the NO way. They love technology to advocate against agriculture in Hawaii, yet farmers and ranchers are not supposed to use technology or advance farm practices to fight pest or disease. This makes no sense to our logical minds but that matters not for their creating their own reality based on misguided perceptions and fear.

If we remain quiet as agriculture then were not transparent or translucent enough; if we speak up were attacked online, in person and our business are boycotted and threatened. This behavior is not how we were raised, nor is it pono, its without Aloha for your fellow-man.  We stand tall, proud of who we are, the food and crops we work hard everyday to bring to Hawaii’s tables. The economic value and jobs we produce for Hawaii is nothing to shake your head at. So NO we will not stand by and allow fear to decimate our way of life, our choice of crops or our Aloha spirit. Were NOT ground zero for Hawaii County Pasture landpesticide poisoning, just look at our lush greenery and we’re no agribusinesses testing grounds. The seed companies produce a valid exportable crop in Hawaii and papaya farmers produce a cheap local food that is also exportable and guess what we support thousands of workers. We should be admired for our tenacity to do business in Hawaii not harassed.

Agriculture is not a religion but its always been deeply rooted in culture and religion. NOW we have become a NEW religion and we’re evil and of course we need a devil, that would be Monsanto in their eyes. We’re not advocating for Monsanto we’re advocating for agriculture in HAWAII. “We are NOT Ground Zero for anything but activism” What better place for earth justice, the sierra club and all the others to send their warriors and fund unscrupulous tactics…

Find a new religion because agriculture, farmers and ranchers we’re the toughest bunch you will ever meet and we’re not going silently!

Fact Sheet about Food Safety Issues of Genetically Engineered (GE) Crops

Fact Sheet about Food Safety Issues of Genetically Engineered (GE) Crops

Prepared by

Dr. Susan C. Miyasaka, Agronomist
Dr. Russell Nagata, Plant Breeder
“Foods consumed today are derived from plants and animals whose genetic makeup
has been modified by sexual crosses and mutation. Recombinant DNA provides a new
tool to make genetic modifications, and this technology is termed genetic engineering
or biotechnology. (Lemaux, 2008)”

“The safety of genetically engineered crops and foods, just as those created by classical
breeding and mutation and grown conventionally or organically, needs to be evaluated
on a case-by-case basis so that informed decisions can be made about their utility,
safety, and appropriateness. (Lemaux, 2008)”
What are the risks of eating transgenes? No negative effects on food safety have been found in
commercialized GE crops.

“To date, no scientifically valid demonstrations have shown that food safety issues of
foods containing genetically engineered (GE) ingredients are greater than those from
conventionally or organically produced foods. (Lemaux, 2008)”

“Extensive risk assessment and safety testing of crops developed through the use of genetic
engineering has shown that there are no varieties in use that pose risks to consumers. (Wieczorek
and Wright, 2012)”

“No reproducible data has shown that transgene DNA from commercialized GE crops behave
differently than native plant DNA. (Lemaux, 2008).”

“It was concluded that the transgenic soybean diet had no negative effect on fetal, postnatal,
pubertal or adult testicular development [of mice]. (Brake and Evenson, 2004)”

Do GE foods have changes in nutritional content? No substantial differences in nutritional content have been found between commercialized GE foods and non-GE foods.

Our data show that the contents of nutrients… of GE Rainbow papaya are within the range of
those of non-GE papaya and that the Rainbow cultivar is substantially similar to the non-GE
cultivar. (Tripathi and others, 2010)”

“The results [for Round-up Ready soybeans] demonstrated that the composition of these GE
lines is equivalent to that of conventional soybean cultivars in the form consumed by humans.
(Lemaux, 2008)”
Have allergens been introduced through GE? No allergens have been introduced through
commercialized GE crops, due to extensive food safety tests conducted prior to approval by
FDA.2

“Although not mandatory, to date all companies marketing new GE foods have consulted with
the FDA and performed recommended analyses to determine if introduced proteins have
properties that indicate possible allergenicity, i.e., similarities to known allergens, small size,
slow digestibility, and/or high heat stability. (Lemaux, 2008)”

“Following accepted allergenicity assessment criteria, our results show that the transgenederived PRSV CP [Papaya Ring Spot Virus coat protein] does not pose a risk of food allergy.
(Fermin and others, 2011).”

“In recent years a variety of safety studies were conducted specifically on native Bt
proteins to show that they do not have characteristics of food allergens or toxins. (Lemaux,
2008)”

Can GE foods fed to animals result in transfer of transgenes to animals? DNA and proteins are
broken down in the digestive tract. There is no scientific evidence to date that shows that
transgenes or their products are transferred to animals fed GE foods or excreted from
animals fed GE foods.

“To date a large number of experimental studies with livestock have shown that rDNA
[recombinant DNA] fragments or proteins derived from GM plants have not been detected in
tissues, fluids or edible products of farm animals(Lemaux, 2008).”

Can GE foods increase antibiotic resistance in human and animal intestinal flora? There is no
scientific evidence to date that GE foods can transfer antibiotic resistance to gut bacteria.
And current research now allows the removal of selection genes (antibiotic resistance
genes) or marker genes (gus gene) from GE plants.

“To demonstrate the fate of transgene DNA in humans, the antibiotic resistance gene from GE
maize was shown not to transfer to gut bacteria in chickens fed GE maize. (Lemaux, 2008)”

Why doesn’t the FDA require labeling of GE foods? The FDA does require labeling of GE
foods IF the product contains allergens and its source must be named.

“If a food contains a new, potentially allergy-causing introduced protein, the label must state that
the product contains the allergen and name its source. (Lemaux, 2008).”

Are there positive benefits of GE crops on food safety? Bt corn can be SAFER to eat than
non-GE corn, because of less damage due to corn earworms and lower infections of kernels
by fungi that contain mycotoxins.

“A positive aspect of safety regarding Bt corn is the lower levels of mycotoxins compared with
non-Bt corn. Mycotoxins are toxic and carcinogenic chemicals produced as secondary
metabolites of fungal colonization that occur as a result of insects such as the corn earworm
carrying the mycotoxin containing fungi that infest the kernels following wounding.” (Lemaux,
2008)
